How One Website Is Convincing People To Pay For Cartoon Porn
After eight years of offering every form of aggregated hentai, a pornograhic subgenre of Japanese anime—Fakku.net is planning to make people pay.
Fakku CEO Jacob Grady, says the site is in the process of removing all unlicensed content in preparation of its premium launch at the end of 2015. “I’ve always believed that creating a product worth spending money on would be enough to get people to support it,” said Grady, who launched Fakku from his Worcester State University dorm when he was 19.
Now, Fakku is eschewing the free model that’s set it among the top 50 “adult” websites on the Internet, with more than 250 million visitors and 12 billion pageviews in 2014, in favor of partnerships with esteemed hentai artists for premium English-language content.
Grady believes that despite the Internet’s embarrassment of pornographic riches, Fakku.net’s fans will chip in $10 or so a month for subscriptions. The site is already testing the waters by offering porn book pre-orders in paperback and digital formats.
“A large portion of our users are already choosing to support our books,” said Grady in a Skype interview.
Previously, Fakku offered pirated content submitted by readers. People would buy Japanese hentai, add English language captions, and upload it to Fakku. While Grady said the site immediately dealt with takedown requests from artists who contacted him, breaking the law wasn’t a sustainable long-term business plan.
“I’ve always believed that creating a product worth spending money on would be enough to get people to support it,” he said. “Gabe Newell said it best: ‘Piracy is a service problem,’ with Fakku we are striving to create a service worth paying for.”
The uniqueness of Fakku’s material certainly helps. With regular porn, amateur exhibitionists can create their own for free. Few fans, however, can or want to recreate the Japanese erotic drawings that make up hentai. Grady’s plan to make it a “service worth paying for” means offering an easy-to-use online reader, plus DRM-free downloads minus the bloatware.
Fakku deals exclusively with hentai, but it is following in the footsteps of G-rated anime and manga sites with Grady’s latest decision. The most popular of these is Crunchyroll, a website that began as a provider of unlicensed, illegal fansubs—adding local subtitles to ripped copies of Japanese anime. Today the website exclusively provides licensed anime and was acquired by The Chernin Group in 2013.
“We showed [publishers] that anime fans are decent people willing to support the anime industry directly by subscription or ad support and that piracy is really a last resort for when they really love the content but can’t get it any other way,” Crunchyroll CEO Kun Gao told me.
Like Crunchyroll, Fakku can expect its business prospects to increase with this decision. At the Anime Expo conference, Grady announced they already are. Fakku will be simul-publishing the two biggest hentai magazines in Japan. It will be working with artist Toshio Maeda to publish remastered editions of his manga, including hentai classic La Blue Girl.
Fakku has begun the process of removing unlicensed content, but it won’t be completely removed from the site until the end of 2015. That means some of the sites’ traffic is from users with no intention to subscribe. However, Grady is unfazed.
“As a fan, Fakku going legitimate is a no brainer,” Grady said. “It means we finally get to directly support these artists. Even if we lose a bunch of traffic that’s okay, because in the end we’ll show Japan that they have fans here that want to support official English uncensored releases.”
Censorship has always been a touchy subject at Fakku, which often features content that could be considered controversial. Content that is illegal in some countries, like cartoons featuring girls that look prepubescent, requires an extra click to view, but as long as the work is licensed, it is never removed from the site. “We will never back down from publishing controversial content,” Grady maintains. He wants to show Japanese creators that they don’t need to make a more vanilla version for English language readers.
While Grady wouldn’t get into the numbers, it’s clear from Fakku’s expansion of late that the company is doing well financially. Fakku has a general store, esports sponsorships, and most recently, a line of erotic skateboards. Grady said that as a fan, his goal is always to “create something I would want to buy as a fan” and divulged that sales have been solid.
“When I made Fakku, piracy was not my goal. From the start I hoped to eventually work with publishers and artists in Japan and to show them that there were fans in the United States willing to support them,” he said. “Now, a large portion of our userbase has chosen to do that.”
