I read only English and Russian (on rare occasions) VNs at first, but since many sequels of my favourite Japanese VNs were left without translation, it motivated me to start studying Japanese. If anyone here is thinking to do the same, I recommend to start with studying grammar. At the beginning, I tried to translate without learning any grammar, just with the help of Google Translate and Jisho, and I revealed that I made a huge amount of mistakes, with some of my translations totally missing the mark. So, I stopped translating until I finished reading a grammar book. Recently, when I read a Japanese VN with the help of the Visual Novel Reader and look at community subtitles, I see that some people are doing the same mistake I did at first, translating without knowing any grammar and getting only about 20-60% of their translations correct. It's a pity that all their hard work gives such meager results. As of now, I completed a fair share of Japanese VNs with the help of the Visual Novel Reader and Hook Any Text, and totally used to reading and translating Japanese. I think I read VNs in Japanese just a little slower than in English.
