Why do people love an anime at start but when a critic says "this is shit" everyone suddenly thinks that particular anime is shit?

I believe that people are afraid to be looked down upon for liking these shows, so they just went with the general consensus and try to shit on these shows.

SAO is the most prime example of this phenomenon. While I do believe that SAO was bad, I also think that it is overly hated. So many people try to nitpick on every details of the show because they think liking SAO equals bad taste.

well, I don't give a shit about those critics, if I find it good then it's good, but if I hate it then no one can ever change my mind about it...

I still think I feel the most important, others are others, do not care about the feelings of others.

I think they do that, because they saw the anime for the emotion of the moment! Like a fury or something like that. So... When everyone talk about it and like it, they do the same. But when the people say "it's shit", then they hate it. In my opinion, they are people that never really liked the serie... Or that have a very weak personality. Or maybe they have two... Who knows? When you love something, you need to protect it to the end.
In my country I see this all the days. One day something is popular and everyones love it. But the next week has already forgot. T-T
And normally are popular series like Naruto, SAO, Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), and recently even Kuzu no Honkai.
But other anime they not commented because they don't know anything about it. Others like Jigoku Shoujo, Claymore, Gantz or Berserk, that I really love it and are masterpieces.

If other people don't like an anime I like, it doesn't make me dislike it or change my opinion on it. Though I can see why some people may see things differently when a critic points certain things out about an anime that's either bad about it or doesn't make sense that they didn't see before.

1. If someone worships that critic and trusts that critic's opinion over his/her own opinion.
2. If someone didn't actually know about that anime much but liked it for some superficial reasons, then he/she can change their opinion after seeing a review backed by sound arguments.
3. Someone may actually not think that this anime is bad but doesn't want to go against the flow and stand out, pretending that he/she shares the popular view.
4. Someone may really not care about that anime and belittle it only to enrage its fans (a troll).
5. ??? Humans are complex creatures with complex motives they sometimes even don't realize themselves. There may be many reasons which depend on a person.

People are, in general, afraid of being the odd one out in a majority. That trait is inherited from our predecessors ages ago with ancient traditions (many of them should be left behind in the past forever.)

There is also the bias towards the opinion of people who you hate or who you love.
E.g. if a person loves one show, and you happen to dislike this person, you watch this show with a prejudice that keeps telling you this certain show is meh. If the first impression is bad and the show is not above average, many chances you will hate it for good.
