The music is not so important as to stop me from an interesting game. But if it is good it make the playing more enjoyable. There is some OSTs that I like very much. Ayakashi Gohan and Oukyuu Yasoukyoku are my latest favourites.

About cruel scenes or brutal ones - this is my deal breaker. If it is just a scene or two and the romantic interest is NOT the perpetrator, then it is still OK, but if the cruelty is the main theme, or the guy is scary or cruel, then I am out of this game as fast as I can deinstal or delete it. :D Somehow I can't accept that the heroine could stay with a man that can easily(without remorse and again) cause pain or make her feel horrible most of the time.

(such as AI Escort)
Is this game about relationship with robots too?

Yeah, it's the worst for me too. I can still watch such a route to the end, but mostly in hopes that something will change for the better. Or, in the most terrible cases, I just hope that there will be an opportunity to get rid of this guy (example - Sumeragi and Kaguya's relationship in Jooubachi no Oubou).

As for me, if I find that a game has good characters, plot and art, I can like it even if I don't like it's music. In the worst case, I may just mute it or lower the volume down so that it's barely audible. However, if I like music, I will enjoy a game much more.
Wow, we indeed share a lot of similarities :)
Your solution is exactly what I'd do to play games with annoying or dull BGMs. I could play while muting my games too XD! That's my adaptation as an Otome gamer.

Another question: what's your opinion on the cruelty in otome games? If a game is really cruel, can you still play it? Or maybe, you even like cruel games?
Because I love BWS, you can roughly guess I enjoy cruel games... IFF (and that's a big if), the game can successfully suspend my disbelief.

Let me just give 2 examples - one success, and one failure, both from the same game... which I won't name because I'm too lazy to add spoiler tag. Also, warning: clichéd tropes ahead

Success:
MC, who is an orphan, living with her greedy and cruel aunt, was sold off to a rich nobleman. She could be easily killed on his whim (and she was in 20+ distinct bad ends lol)

I could accept that trope when the game settings showed me clues to associate it with the Industrial Revolution era. In that a period, human rights didn't exist.

Failure:
The whole plot was driven by a curse, which turned out to be a robot. It had literally lived and served the nobleman's family for countless generations, and thus executed all the males when they reached some certain age.

That random ambush of sci-fi in a supposedly alternate history game threw me off completely. Even if the humanoid's purpose was cruel and pathetic at times, I just downright couldn't accept either its existence or plot resolution.

If cruelty is necessary for the game plot and the plot is good I guess I'll have a love-hate relationship with it

If heroine has a name I'll not change it and character in game will call her name out loud

Question: how important is music for you in otome games? Can you still like a game if you don't like its music? Also, what otome game's music do you like most?
The music isn't as important for me as the voice acting is, so if the voice acting is good I don't worry too much about the background music. I liked some of the more sad sounding music in Ephemeral though
